showing distance in time for walking routes

    Hi

I'm doing some work on increasing walking and am looking into examples of projects that now show distance in time to key locations.

In particular I'm trying to find out if there are any projects that have been in place long enough for some evaluation to have taken place on the effectiveness of showing distance in time.

    Regards

    Philippa

Re: showing distance in time for walking routes

     Hi Philippa,

There is a fairly comprehensive report about the Legible London project which you can find here:

    http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/businessandpartners/Legible_London_report.pdf

We would always recommend indicating showing distances in time as we know from previous research we have done that perceived time and distance can be a barrier to walking.  We have just been working on some health walks maps for Camden NHS which show time based on a 3 mph pace.  We chose this pace because we are trying to encourage people to walk reasonably briskly in order to elicit the full health benefits, but a slower pace can also be appropriate in certain settings.
