- Transport facilities – a major tourism promoterhttp://www.walkengland.org.uk/forums/thread/201.aspxSat, 25 Jul 2009 08:11:25 GMT1c8d6056-89c3-4656-8162-40572b8be723:201GLORIA310http://www.walkengland.org.uk/forums/thread/201.aspxhttp://www.walkengland.org.uk/forums/commentrss.aspx?SectionID=11&PostID=201
Apart from the negative image and the poor quality of accommodation, the lack of cheap and efficient transport facilities have hampered the development of tourism in certain countries. For example, of the nearly 3000 million people that traveled around the world, India could lure a mere 0.40 per cent, when including the nationals from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Even among the South East Asian nations, few people actually wanted to visit the Indian subcontinent. Poor marketing efforts from the part of the tourism department and a negative image of the country as a whole are the main reasons cited for such a situation. A major image makeover exercise is needed at short notice.

At 3 percent, the annual growth rate in the tourist traffic is well below the world average of 10 percent. However, there are certain exceptions with the approximately 25 to 30 percent growth rate attained by countries such as Sri Lanka and Thailand. It becomes evident from India’s unsatisfactory performance that all is not well with the tourism industry in India and more so with the tourism infrastructure, especially the transportation facilities.

India has sent back more unsatisfied tourists in the years gone by on account of the high air fares, congestion, non-availability of air bookings, complicated travel formalities, lack of space in the domestic carriers and the non-availability of train bookings at short notice. These facts are further corroborated by the findings of the surveys conducted by the scores of market research agencies.

When considering the management approach of the Hotels in London England as a whole could learn much from the mistakes made by the Indian tourism department. Almost all the prominent hotels in London have a multicultural employee background, and these hotels have made significant strides in changing their approaches to customer management. Learning from the mistakes committed by the tourism departments of countries like India has helped the hotels in London to make great strides.

I hadn't made the connection with Jamie's recent attempt to get people cooking with encouraging physical activity until I read this on his website...see the last paragraph.

Perhaps there is a link to be made somewhere??

Rotherham Food Centre

The Ministry of Food Centre in Rotherham is the starting point for Jamie’s campaign.

It’s
somewhere for local people to go to learn the basics of cooking and get
friendly advice on recipes, ingredients shopping, nutrition, equipment,
local and seasonal food, and how to make good simple meals on a tight
budget.

Every lunchtime there are cookery demonstrations, hosted
by the two lovely ladies who run the show, Lisa Taylor and Jane Pond,
or one of their team of great volunteers.

The Centre is now
signing up people for cooking classes using simple Ministry of Food
recipes. There are three slots every day, and they’re open to anyone,
individuals and community groups, who want to learn the basics:
chopping, frying, roasting and baking.

The local team of Health Trainers are
also based at the Centre and are there to offer help and information
about things like giving up smoking, taking more exercise and dealing
with stress.

I'm interested in the barriers to people walking, and more and more I find that people are worried about what to wear on their feet and also what type of bag to carry, that still looks good but is easy to carry.

I have noticed that there is an emerging market for shoes that make walking easier (I was sent a link this morning by a friend for fold-up shoes that slip into a handbag for when your feet get sore...but what do you do with your other shoes if this happens when you're outside already!?). I therefore wondered if people have found any reasonably priced bags and other items that encourage people to walk?

There are lots of fun and stylish clothes and bags that encourage running (there are IPOD trainers etc), and I think we need to start a revolution with other large design/clothing companies to encourage walking (without looking naff!).

I'd love to hear about them and share them here with others who are currently organising their events for this year.

One great idea for getting publicity and participation is to link your walking event to existing important dates in the diary. In Kingston, they held an event on Father's Day recently:

17th June 2008: Father’s Day Treasure Hunt

Father’s Day saw families setting off from St Paul’s Church in Hook on a trail of clues that took them around the quiet roads and green spaces of Chessington.

The event was designed to promote the Walking for Health programme and to encourage sustainable forms of transport. Walkers were rewarded with free healthy snacks, face painting, entry into a raffle for healthy prizes and a stunt bike display, which even saw Debra the Zebra getting very close to the action.

The feedback was very positive - one participant described the best thing about the walking was ‘being with mum and dad’.

It was great to see so many friends and colleagues too. We will be very busy over the coming weeks building the networks and meeting up with all the people who have expressed an interest to work with us. We will keep you posted with news and events from the world of walking and look forward to hearing your comments and contributing to your discussions. Remember to vote for your top priority for walking!
