We know the biggest barrier to walking is a lack of information. Not knowing where you can go, what it will be like or how long it will take is enough to prevent a lot of us even thinking of walking.
There are lots of ways to promote walking, the clever bit is working out which one works best for your project.
Good information provision is key to encouraging people to try new activities or visit new places and of course it only works well if you know who you are aiming at and what message to get across.
We promote walking and walking projects in a range of different ways. We always start by considering the public's point of view. Who are they? What do they need to know? What will they respond to? Then we think about the medium. Are we aiming at regular users of the internet or do we want to use printed materials - if so how are we going to distribute them? What are we trying to sell? Are we telling people about the wonderful places on their doorstep or are we inspiring them to go further afield and explore a new area? The thinking process is key to ensuring good end products.
For several years we worked with the Countryside Agency developing and delivering a marketing strategy for National Trails. We promote London's key walking routes through Walk London using a dedicated website to inspire and provide route details, providing printed leaflets and postcards to attract new users and organising walking weekends to reach out to even more people. We engage and interact using Facebook and we tempt new people in with Twitter. We also run events, attend shows and conferences and send out newsletters.
