Success Stories
Go for Gold
Go for Gold is an informal walking scheme developed to encourage children (and parents)
to walk to school, and to help reduce congestion around the school. It is a reward
scheme whereby the children have a gold card (or passport) stamped every time
they walk to school.
Go For Gold came about when Nicky Batkin and Holmer Green First School in Buckinghamshire
wanted to encourage the children and parents to walk to school, at least part of
the way. The scheme had to be simple and inexpensive to set up, to ensure the school
community would get involved. Follow the link for the details of this Award Winning
initiative.
Walk to School across the curriculum
The Environmental Transport Association is urging primary schools to use an exciting
curriculum resource during Walk to School Week (19 - 23 May 2008) and hopes that
Local Authorities will help them to promote the resource and continue to use it
throughout the school year.
The ETA recognises that many excellent resources sit unused in staffrooms because
they are not immediately relevant to the main school curriculum.
The new ETA resource aims to solve this problem by providing a full themed week
aimed at children in years 5 and 6 which will address day to day planning objectives.
There is enough material in the resource to last for at least half a term, and teachers
will need to select what is appropriate for them. Similar resources for other age
groups are planned for the future.
Success at Dorset School
A regular walking incentive scheme at one primary school in Dorset, England, launched
in International Walk to School Week in October 2004 involved more than 400 pupils
and has seen car trips all the way to the school reduce by 18 percent and walking
and cycling increase by 16 percent.
