    Ministry of Food.....and physical activity!

I hadn't made the connection with Jamie's recent attempt to get people cooking with encouraging physical activity until I read this on his website...see the last paragraph.

Perhaps there is a link to be made somewhere??

    Rotherham Food Centre

The Ministry of Food Centre in Rotherham is the starting point for Jamie’s campaign.

It’s somewhere for local people to go to learn the basics of cooking and get friendly advice on recipes, ingredients shopping, nutrition, equipment, local and seasonal food, and how to make good simple meals on a tight budget.

Every lunchtime there are cookery demonstrations, hosted by the two lovely ladies who run the show, Lisa Taylor and Jane Pond, or one of their team of great volunteers.

The Centre is now signing up people for cooking classes using simple Ministry of Food recipes. There are three slots every day, and they’re open to anyone, individuals and community groups, who want to learn the basics: chopping, frying, roasting and baking.

The local team of Health Trainers are also based at the Centre and are there to offer help and information about things like giving up smoking, taking more exercise and dealing with stress.

    Hi Gary

Health Trainers are a really useful resource when it comes to engaging communities, so it's great they were mentioned in the article you found.  I remember when they recruited the Health Trainer Coordinators a few years ago, as it was happening when i was working within an NHS Health Promotion Team.  They have a very broad remit and actually recruit volunteers in their patch to become 'signposters' within their own communities.

I would definately recommend that anyone wishing to approach/work with certain communities should find out if there are Health Trainers in their area, and get in touch with them.  They are often very friendly and helpful people with a great attitude about getting people happy and healthy.

What do you think about adopting Jaime's philosophy - instead of teaching 13 people to cook a recipe, how about taking 13 people on your favourite walk, then they take another 13 on their favourite walk and so on.... instead of 'pass it on' it could be 'walk it off'!!!!!!
