If you want to know where to walk - visit www.walk4life.info
The Walk4Life website was created to provide easy access to walking information to encourage people to walk more. It is designed to be easy to use so that everyone can enjoy finding walks and recording their activity.
http://www.walk4life.infoHow far do you walk in a week? It might be further than you think. The 'track your progress' area of the website allows you to find out.
If you like walking with a group you can use the website as your group's virtual notice board.
Some of us simply love a challenge - and for many people a challenge provides the incentive they need to walk more.
Many people enjoy walking with a group and there are lots of guided walks all over the country. The difficulty can be knowing how to find them.
The main reason we ask people using the website to create a profile is so that they can see a record of how much walking they are doing. Every time you 'complete' a walk the distance you have walked adds to your profile. You can also add in miles walked that you have recorded in other ways. The website stores the data as daily totals and you can see your progress monthly or over the year. It's a great way to stay motivated and to encourage everyone to walk just that little bit more.
Why not track your progress here.
The groups feature of the website works for both actual walking groups and for virtual groups. Real groups can use it to post information about their next walk, share comments and to sign up to challenges. Virtual groups can do the same but the main purpose of virtual groups is to take a challenge.
School classes can set up as groups and see how far the whole class walks in a week. They can challenge another class to a race! This works for workplaces too or for groups with a shared interest, for example the Pedigree Walkies group of dog owners.

Challenges are designed to provide motivation to walk more. You can choose from a ready made challenge or create your own. Each challenge has a distance which equates to a real distance, for example the length of the Pennine Way and a time deadline. When you sign up to a challenge all of the miles you and your group walk are added up until you have completed the challenge. When it's complete your group gets a gold star but much more importantly, you get the satisfaction of completing your virtual walk.
Some of the challenges are sponsored and some donate cash to charity when the challenge has been met. Charities often support challenges as a way to encourage people to improve their health by walking more.

Partner organisations can add events to the Walk4Life website (if you want to do this let us know and we'll give you a password). With thousands of visitors each month, many of whom are looking for events, it's a good place to be. People can search for events in their area or on specific dates. It's perfect for Walking for Health groups who run regular weekly walks - especially groups that are looking for new members.

The widget is a bit of computer code that can be added to any website to provide a walkfinder box. It's easy to create - visit the widget page and follow the instructions. You can adjust the size and colour (it comes in yellow of course and in white if yellow isn't your thing). So if you want to encourage people to walk more or want to provide a service to people using your own website who might also want to find walks, the widget is the perfect solution.
We've been promoting the widget to a variety of people and it is very popular, especially with village websites, holiday cottage websites, fitness and health websites, as well as charities and sponsored walk websites.
The 'create your walk' feature allows you to draw a walk onto Ordnance Survey maps simply by clicking your mouse. The website shows how long the walk is as you draw, so if you are planning a walk you know what to expect, or if you are adding walk you have done you can see how far you walked (very important for encouraging children to walk).
We worked hard to make this feature really easy to use - and it is! It must be, over 14,000 walks have been added to the website by members of the public within the first year.

We know that many of you would love a walk finder on your own website so we created one. It can be added to any website, and - hey presto - your own walkfinder!
One of the best features of the Walk4Life website is the ability to draw your own walk and even better, see how long it is.
